Great Ocean Road

- A 3 day trip to the beach at the village "Lorne" -

About 2h driving on the South coast of Australia/Victoria from Melbourne is the famouse Great Ocean Road.
It is a panorama street which follows along the seaside with great view and smsller beaches on the side.

My friend Gudrun suggested that she would take me there and I could stay in a hostel in the fisher & surfe village "Lorne" to enjoy the last days of the Australian summer on the beach as it will become autum soon.

Lorne is a holiday place for Melbourne residents, it is very common to own a "holiday house" somewhere near the beach to escape the big city life.

I thought this trip was a brilliant idea and I will get to know some other young travellers at the hostel or even proper surfers.

However, after we arrived at the little backpacker accomodation right on Great Ocean Road everybody here was very relaxed and I could move my stuff in streight away without showing a passport and paying the nights cash.

Cost for a single room: 80$ and 30$ for a girl roomshare of 4-8 but as it was off season already there was only 1 other girl with me in the room from the Fiji islands :)

Visiting the cottage made me realize how small and pieceful it is here.
Only a few shops and supermarkets apart from hotels and a camping area.

As I mentioned earlier, Lorne is a famouse holiday village for "Melbourners" this is why the food prices in restaurants are quite expensive:
Main course: around 24$ and a beer 7$.

The information center, right at the beginning of the village, gives you few option what you can see around the area. I even could lend out a bike for free at the hostel:))

I decided after my first afternoon at the beach, just chilling relaxing and swimming in the 3m waves, around 8pm when it's not that hot any more but stil light, to drive up to "Teddy's Lookout" with my hostel-bike.

It is a long way up there from the backside of the hill even by bike, but once reaching the viewpoint it was incredible and really worth seeing!

The most common tree is the "gum tree" and the eucalypzus tree. Yes they have wild Koalas here, but sadly not on every tree as they only like a specific species and because of their fure colour it's hard to spot them.

Wild kangaruus are everywhere in the forests. Watch out for the famouse yellow signs!!

According to the forest areas: Australiens even make controlled fire areas in case it gets too dry.

Another beautiful animal is the white Kakadoo bird(parrot) but there are way too many and the sound what they make is horrible and too loud. Well nobody is perfect but the locals really don't like the bird as they destroy the trees too! Feeding not permitted!!!!

The bike ride alonge great ocean road and watching the sunset was one of the highlights;)))

The second day was mainly just chilling on the beach and enjoying the rest of the sun as it's already autum here in Australia.

Nevertheless, Lorne offers a few "Surfe courses" as well. It ain't cheap but the school provides a sufeboard and the "wet-suits"so that you are protected from the sun and don't become cold very easily.
